November’s selection will be Under the Wide and Starry Sky by Nancy Horan. At the age of thirty-five, Fanny van de Grift Osbourne has left her philandering husband in San Francisco to set sail for Belgium – with her three children and nanny in tow – to study art. It is a chance for this adventurous woman to start over, to make a better life for all of them, and to pursue her own desires. Not long after her arrival, however, tragedy strikes, and Fanny and her children repair to a quiet artists’ colony in France where she can recuperate. Emerging from a deep sorrow, she meets a lively Scot, Robert Louis Stevenson, ten years her junior, who falls instantly in love with the earthy, independent, and opinionated “belle Americaine.”
Let’s gather together for a Thanksgiving Potluck Feast! The turkey and beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) will be provided, but members are asked to bring a favorite Thanksgiving side dish, salad, or dessert. If your last name starts with M-Z, please bring a side dish or salad, A-L please bring a dessert. Of course, if you have a Thanksgiving favorite that’s not in your category, you can bring that as well.
Non-members are welcome to come with members, but will be charged 10 euros/adult and 5 euros/child.
The American Club of Lyon is hosting a champagne tasting starting at 7:30p.m. Friday 27th November.
Antoine and Virginie Lutun will bring 3 types of their Champagne Dallancourt for everyone to taste. Small canapés will be provided, and there will be an opportunity to buy the champagne afterward. You will also have an opportunity to buy the champagne and pick it up later.
Antoine and Virginie Lutun started their domain in Epernay in 1999 and lunched their first Champagne Dallancourt in 2010. Their vineyard is located on southeast slop of the Montagne de Reims and spreads over the villages of Ay and Mutigny. The champagne is based on a blend of chardonnay and pinot noir grapes.
On Saturday November 21st, American Club members are invited to get a special behind the scenes look, by observing all or parts of class and rehearsal prior to attending the full, theatre performance of "A Tchaikovsky Afternoon".
ACM Ballet Theatre, under the artistic direction of Meredith Hudson, will then present these excerpts from The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, and of course The Nutcracker at the main performance (on Sunday December 6th) at Les Echappées Belles in Lyon. The group of pre-professional dancers will be joined by students of “The Thursday Class”, and for the first time, students of Pascale Jacot’s ballet studio La Roulotte à Vapeur from Paris.

Our selection for October 26th is Ghost Story by Peter Straub. For four aging men in the terror-stricken town of Milburn, New York, an act inadvertently carried out in their youth has come back to haunt them. Now they are about to learn what happens to those who believe they can bury the past -- and get away with murder. Peter Straub's classic bestseller is a work of "superb horror" (The Washington Post Book World) that, like any good ghost story, stands the test of time -- and conjures our darkest fears and nightmares.

Did you know that Lyon has ice hockey team? The LHC Les Lions have called the Charlemagne Skating Rink home since 1967. The arena, with a capacity of 3,175 seats, is one of the largest in France. The team draws some of the largest crowds in the country each weekend, hosting an average of 3,000 fans per game. The team has seen a quick ascension through the ranks in just the four years since being relegated from the Magnus League. In 2013-14, Lyon beat the Bordeaux Boxers to return to the top division in France, after having been beaten in the finals by the Brest Albatross in the previous season. In 2014-15, the Lions stayed clear of relegation with a record of 8-15-3 and will once again compete in the Magnus League in 2015-16. Excluding their championship in 1907, the Lions’ best Magnus League finish has been third, which the team accomplished in 1998 and 1999.

Our selection for September 21st is All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. It was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. A blind French girl and an orphaned Nazi conscript anchor Anthony Doerr's sweeping novel of German occupation. Intricately interlocking sections begin to fall, like tumblers, into place as the novel progresses, while larger themes of loss and isolation play out upon characters' fixations with radio waves, locksmithing, gemology, and shell collecting. Part historical fiction, part fable, part cabinet of curiosities, All the Light We Cannot See builds its own rare and fabulous world.
